We'd love to receive your on this article!
This so vital a topic !
But how does it fit within a believers life and constant daily walk ??
A good question indeed, and one that has recently been raised yet again.
OK. Few would have 'searched ones heart' as much as I have over the decades since being 'born again' … the 'holiness' assembly where it all happened to me saw to that as they majored on being 'clean' !
But scripture puts it all into focus ..
John the Baptist basically had a one word message … REPENT for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand Matthew 3:2 as he prepared a nation for Jesus to come later
And Jesus began his message where John the Baptist left off … with the identical words ... REPENT for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand Matthew 4:17
But remember …. this message then was primarily to Israel and to the Jews Matthew 3:5
not to the Gentiles !
And Peter echoed the same message after Jesus resurrection
But Peter ... said to them, “Men of Judea and all who dwell in Jerusalem, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. Acts 2:14, 38 – 41
So, this message was primarily for the Jews and for the self-righteous followers of the Mosaic LAW which was to be replaced by the universal message of Gods GRACE to ALL the Gentile world.
Later, as in now, Or do you despise the riches of His goodness, forbearance, and longsuffering, not knowing that it is the goodness of God leads you to repentance? Romans 2:4
And ... please note … it is the goodness of God, NOT the fear of the consequences that leads to repentance.
It is the Holy Spirits work to convict of sin ... not the pulpit thumpers and legalistic ministers of holiness !
And when He (the Holy Spirit, the Comforter) has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: John16:8
The fact has always been that 'honest sinners' know all to well where they are at, and their condition ... a woman in the city who was a sinner, when she knew that Jesus sat at the table in the Pharisee’s house, brought an alabaster flask of fragrant oil, and stood at His feet behind Him weeping; and she began to wash His feet with her tears, and wiped them with the hair of her head; and she kissed His feet and anointed them with the fragrant oil. Luke 7:36-50
And one of the thieves crucified with Jesus “Do you not even fear God, seeing you are under the same condemnation? And we indeed justly, for we receive the due reward of our deeds; but this Man has done nothing wrong.” Luke 23: 40,41
Then, I heard a prostitute say (recorded on film) when asked to attend a local Church … 'why should I do that, I feel bad enough already ? “
So, repentance is a foundation item ... Therefore, leaving …. the elementary principles of Christ, … not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith toward God, of the doctrine of baptisms, of laying on of hands, of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment. Hebrews 6:1, 2
But these foundations, though vital, are not the actual 'building' that we occupy and use !
The essential foundations are hidden underground, supporting the structure built on them.
And this returns us to the main question ... how does repentance fit within a believers life and constant daily walk ?
Having laid the foundation of repentance, along with the other foundational items, how does repentance fit into a believers life ?
In one sense, repentance is a way of life. To me, the word 'sorry' is one of my most frequent utterances … we are all fallible and human, and we all need to walk humbly, forgiving and being forgiven.
But with a 'holiness ministry' continually drumming in my ears, I found that I was for ever 'grubbing' inwardly … I was sin conscious instead of being Jesus conscious !
“It is the upward look that sanctifies” Andrew Murray
Then the realisation … I was only considering the errors of which I was aware !!
What about my errors of which I wasn't aware ?? Would they sink me ??
And then the gigantic thought … what if God was to show me ALL that was the matter with me … ALL my blindnessess, ALL my weaknessess, ALL my blemishes, ALL my failings … such a revelation would 'blow me out of the water ' it would be to much to bear.
Jesus sacrifice MUST cover the Lot … my unknown as well as my known errors !!
for who amongst us knows themselves and ALL their errors TOTALLY ?
And then another tremendous realisation … that WE ARE CREATURES OF T I M E !
and that God is ETERNAL .. . He is outside of time Acts 15:8 Revelation 1:8 John 8:58
the PAST, the PRESENT and the FUTURE are ALL THE SAME to Him !
AND SO ARE OUR SINS, OUR ERRORS, to HIM the timeless one
They are compacted into the one point of TIME they are and must be all happening at the same moment of whatever 'time' is, to Him who is beyond our earthly time
Jesus sacrifice must cover THE LOT “Calvary covers it ALL” the song goes
My PAST, My PRESENT and my F U T U R E sins …. together … forgiven !
Oh the relief, the Burden lifted, the sheer JOY that it brings
F O R G I V E N … of the LOT
Not freedom TO sin but freedom FROM sin big difference !
There is therefore now NO CONDEMNATION to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit. Romans 8:1
Instead of continually taking our errors to be washed and cleansed, we instead live under the fountain of His cleansing blood.
Sure if there is a grievous fall or sin, … 'a crack appearing in the foundation” as it were, we need to confess and repent … as Peter did when he denied Jesus publicly with curses and swearing, then remembered Jesus words and wept bitterly Matthew 26:74, 75
And Peter again, at the last supper, when Jesus washed the disciples feet … and Peter wanted a total wash … Jesus said to him, “He who is bathed needs only to wash his feet, but is completely cleanJohn 13: 4-17 COMPLETELY CLEAN … get it ?
And right here is the total example of what we have been considering … Jesus was not yet sacrificed … and Peter was yet to deny his Lord with oaths and swearing … but according to Jesus Peter was 'completely clean' … Peters denial and Jesus sacrifice were at that point still in the FUTURE … because in God … the Lamb was slain from the foundation of the world Revelation 13:8 To God, time zones are none existent … Jesus sacrifice was not only premeditated but it had already happened as far as God was concerned. And our sins likewise … time compacted in God.
But this constant cleansing by the fountain of Jesus blood is not fully acknowledged or preached by most preachers …. and certainly not emphasised by most 'ministers of holiness'
And so many believers stay immature … at 'kindergarten' as it were … continually grubbing inwardly, as I and countless others were encouraged to do.
And it helps keep the pews occupied in the religious system … and the tithes rolling in !
If we have to search, grub and repent continually we would easily lose our confidence towards God, and take our eyes off Jesus.
Sinning and repenting continually, is for the Roman Catholics, and their priests and their confessionals, to help keep their spy network and the religious industry in business.
Yes, we can confess to one another, if and as appropriate Confess your trespasses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. James 5:16
(Note ... not to a priest ... but to 'one another' )
So. basic repentance is for 'sinners' to confess and accept Jesus atoning sacrifice Romans 10 : 9,10
As beloved children of the most high, we thereafter live in a close relationship with Father God, walking and living 'in the light' with the fountain of Jesus blood cleansing us continually.
Believers are JESUS conscious NOT Sin conscious
But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord. 2 Corinthians 3: 18
