We'd love to receive your on this article!
Now this topic is outside my usual scope, but quite recent and special, and has brought me a degree of peace about this unusual topic – our wills !
While this world seems in turmoil and as the years slip by, the thought comes up about what to do with ones worldly goods after our inevitable demise. My wife and I have made what they call “mirror” wills, which is that whoever dies first the other inherits the estate, until that other persons death, then the estate is distributed.
All good … and we have previously made these our joint wills to our descendants.
We have been born into the western world system, and through effort and inflation have accumulated some assets and “stuff” along the way.
But recently my eye caught some Bible verses, that I have pondered. About the “early church” scene soon after Jesus death, resurrection and then - pentecost and the outpouring of the Holy Spirit
And all that believed were together, and had all things common; And sold their possessions and goods, and parted them to all men, as every man had need. And they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart, Praising God, and having favour with all the people. Acts 2:44-47
And the multitude of them that believed were of one heart and of one soul: neither said any of them that ought of the things which he possessed was his own; but they had all things common. And with great power gave the apostles witness of the resurrection of the Lord Jesus: and great grace was upon them all.
Neither was there any among them that lacked: for as many as were possessors of lands or houses sold them, and brought the prices of the things that were sold,
And laid them down at the apostles' feet: and distribution was made unto every man according as he had need. Acts 4:32-35
Now, I have read and heard of some who have “had all things common” Some of these have been well publicised in Australasia, but with many poor results and problems (some ending in moral & sexual calamities) all through the “hearts” and ultimately the motives of various people that get attracted to such, so I have no desire to go there in this day and age.
But, I have pondered about the distribution was made unto every man according as he had need,
A while ago now we made contact with an organisation called “Tough Love” here in New Zealand, basically to support each other through family difficulties - and found them excellent. Recently one person we met there had a child with health problems, who now has had a horrific accident on a bike and is paralysed, so needs re housing to accommodate a wheelchair etc. We were pleased to be able to respond to the internet web site “give a little” for this.
So, and I share this publicly, but vulnerably - we have decided to revise our wills – sure to regard our children and grandchildren appropriately, but to also provide for our executor to eventually distribute some of our estate through this “give a little” web site.
St Paul said .. Behold, the third time I am ready to come to you; and I will not be burdensome to you: for I seek not yours but you: for the children ought not to lay up for the parents, but the parents for the children. 2 Corinthians 12:14
Interestingly, Jesus was questioned about an inheritance :
(As I recall - In those days one's estate was generally passed to the older son )
And one of the company said unto him, Master, speak to my brother, that he divide the inheritance with me. And he said unto him, Man, who made me a judge or a divider over you? And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man's life consists not in the abundance of the things which he possesses. Luke 12:45
So Jesus put this subject into proper perspective.
I have shown you all things, how that so labouring you ought to support the weak, and to remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he said, It is more blessed to give than to receive. Acts 20:35
Then Jesus said to him that bade him, When you make a dinner or a supper, call not your friends, nor your brethren, neither your kinsmen (relatives), nor your rich neighbours; lest they also bid you again, and a recompence be made to you. But when you make a feast, call the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind: And you shall be blessed; for they cannot recompense you: for you shall be recompensed at the resurrection of the just. Luke 14:12-14
David spoke also of those who feared (respected) God - He has dispersed, he has given to the poor; his righteousness endures for ever; his horn shall be exalted with honour. Psalm 112:9 a very interesting Psalm indeed
St Paul picks this up and echoes it As it is written, He has dispersed abroad; he has given to the poor: his righteousness remains for ever. 2 Corinthians 9:9
I recall a saying …
Good men must do their good deeds in the minute particular. Any who talk of the general welfare, are soundrels, flatterers, and rogues. William Blakeley
and another quote …
Do your giving while you're living, then you'll be knowing where its going !
So, an interesting topic that most of us will have to consider – better that leaving it intestate (without a will at all, and the enormous difficulties that can cause)
“What, giving again ?” I asked in dismay,
“and must I keep giving and giving away?”
“Oh no” said the angel, looking me through,
“just give till the Master stops giving to you” |
