of CULTs .. and DESPOTs

Probably we are all aware of the Political Despots of this world, that have continually emerged through ancient and recent history - repeatedly in Africa – Uganda, Zimbabwe; the Middle East – Iraq etc; the Baltic region; and of course Hitler, Stalin and Mussolini in times past. Their murderous rule and reign has left devastation, unspeakable death and destruction with incredible misery and untold inhuman suffering to their countries and peoples.

But recently in Auckland, New Zealand, media attention has been drawn to the emergence of another type of Despot – the religious variety.

And the evolution towards the status of a Cult.

In particular – Destiny 'Church' and its self-appointed 'Bishop' – Brian Tamaki, and his wife Hannah. Recently, 700 of his followers swore a 'Covenant oath' of loyalty, and were given a covenant ring to wear on their right hands.

A church document entitled 'Protocols and Requirements between Spiritual Father and His Spiritual Sons' describes the covenant as 'a solemn oath of commitment that is binding, enduring and unbreakable – irrevocable, undissolvable'

Among the 1300 word detailed requirements are :

to give Mr Tamaki obedience and honour

to always speak of Mr Tamaki in a favourable and positive light

to guard, protect and watch out for him and Pastor Hannah

to not start talking or gesturing while Bishop is speaking

to never openly disagree with Mr Tamaki in front of others

to stand when Mr Tamaki enters a room, and only sit after the Tamaki's are seated

to wait until he has started eating before they start eating

to sit in the front seats, and to be vocal during his preaching with 'amen' and 'thats right' with clapping, shouting and laughing

“His dress code is your dress code”

to find out Mr Tamaki's speaking itinerary and travel to other churches to support him

to never tolerate anyone speaking or talking critically of Mr Tamaki or his wife, family, or the church

to give gifts at times to Mr Tamaki and/or Pastor Hannah

(reportedly approx NZ$500,000 on top of a lavish salary)

to be protective of Mr Tamaki and his family

to be prepared to defend against any problems arising out of his mistakes

to tell others of their love for Mr Tamaki

(interesting to note that the women don't get a mention !)

The world's media can spot such a blatant religious Despot, no matter what the guise, and have correctly in my view unmasked him as such.

One media researcher noted the fact that at a recent Destiny meeting, God was mentioned but twice, while the 'bishop' Brian Tamaki was mentioned over 100 times!

A telling, revealing and ominous statistic indeed!

My eye caught the article by New Zealand Herald columnist Garth George 29.10.09 and his comments

“ Religious totalitarianism is not new. There are many churches in the United States, and quite a few in New Zealand – particularly in Auckland – that are led by 'pastors' who operate in similar dictatorial fashion. But most of them are not nearly so blatant about it.”

And that is precisely what has stirred my agreement.

My observation of the Auckland scene (over a 2 year period of my personally visiting 'leading' local Pentecostal churches) endorses his comment and that observation.

It would seem that in the Pentecostal scene particularly, charismatic leaders emerge, and start off being used by God, then end up using Him - for their own ends

start off building Gods kingdom, then shift to building their own personal Kingdom and Empire instead

begin in 'the Spirit' (of God), end up in the 'natural'

still use the obsolete Old Testament Tithe to rise funds

(but have dropped the Sabbath, circumcision, and animal sacrifices !)

have lavish personal life-styles, tend to become narcissistic

extensive building programmes (supposedly for God's benefit)

(Note – Jesus was a carpenter, but never built a physical Church building, Note - the Apostle Paul was a tentmaker, but never started a franchise chain)

often with television programmes as a visible public 'face'

expect constant attendance, undivided allegiance and devotion

treat any who dare leave as 'traitors' to be shunned and avoided

split up families where only 1 person is 'loyal'

invariably legalistic in doctrine, as opposed to 'Grace' and personal freedom

invariably use Old Testament examples, instead of Jesus and his disciples

(Note - the Apostle Paul worked to support himself and those with him !)

start off as a 'church', end up either as a Cult, or Cult-ish

start off serving others, end up being served themselves by their followers

surround themselves with 'heavies' to dish out the 'discipline'

invariably unaccountable to any other person or group

By observation, several other Auckland Pentecostal type churches use exactly the same techniques of control, authoritarianism, tithing, self-promotion, demanding blind loyalty, while setting a hypocritical example, etc.

Church of Christ New Zealand have done so for decades, just ask any of the many other ex-members.

They have continually had brushes with the media about such methods and interference. The passing of the founder Fred Wilson, has seen the same methods of control and interference continued, even intensified.

City Impact Church North Shore is yet another - Peter & Bev Mortlock      Again - ask their ex-members.

So, my point is this – what Destiny and Tamaki have done so blatantly, other Pentecostal leaders and their churches are using exactly the same techniques, but not quite so obviously, or publicly exposed to the same degree.

When Destiny ventured into the political scene with their “enough is enough” campaign, some other local Pentecostal leaders encouraged them, while several joined in the political campaign with them and endorsed them, many in public (just check the TV footage of their marches), and many more in private.

It would seem that there is a strata in local Pentecostal...ism :

*       the blatant Despots Destiny, Brian Tamaki

**      the 'not so obvious' Despots but using the same techniques

         Church of Christ New Zealand

         City Impact Church

***    other Pentecostal assemblies that use much the the same

methods, but of smaller followings and numbers.

**** the truly called and motivated by the same Spirit and

servant-hood example as Jesus himself, and his true

         disciples.

Garth George ended his column with the words “to Destiny Church members I simply say: be very afraid

And looking at history, that advice would be well worth heading

Jim Jones and Jonestown in the Guyana jungle in 1978,

where 913 devoted followers including 276 children, blindly did what he said - drank the poison and died in agony!

David Koresh at Waco Texas who died with 74 followers including 21 children in 1993, just 16 years ago!

Religious Despots indeed, both the obvious and the secretive ....

be very aware and afraid for them

and heed Jesus words about such ....

Pharisees - blind leaders of the blind Matthew 15:13, 14

Pharisees – they bind heavy burdens, and grievous to be borne, and lay them on mens shoulders, and will not help move them ... Matthew 23:4

they love the highest rooms at feasts, and the chief seats v6

Jesus went into the temple, and cast out all of those that sold or bought in the temple and overthrew the tables of the money-changers .... “you have made my house a den of thieves” Matthew 21 :12, 13

Lordship – it shall not be so among you, who-so-ever will be great, shall be your minister / servant .... for I came not to be served, but to serve   Mark 10: 42-45

Also Philippians 2:3 and 3:18. 19 I Corinthians 3:3 – 8

Religious Pharisees are still with us and among us, alive and well ... only with different Titles and garb in this day and age !

But of exactly the same spirit and techniques as in Biblical times

Jeremiah observed it and summed it up some 2600 years ago ...

a wonderful and horrible thing is committed in the land; the prophets prophesy falsely, and the priests bear rule by their means; and my people love to have it so; and what will you do in the end there-of? .... Jeremiah 5 : 26 - 31
