Were you aware that there are 2 Gospels ?
Well, St Paul thought so ...
He uses straight and strong words …. I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel: Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ. But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed (anathema) Galatians 1: 6-8
pervert = perversion, anathema = cursed … strong words indeed
This “another Gospel “ is but simply a mixture of LAW and GRACE
Schofield echoes this – “the test of the Gospel is Grace – if a message excludes Grace or mingles Law with Grace it is “another Gospel” and the preacher of it is under the anathema of God”
Paul continues … I do not frustrate the grace of God: for if righteousness come by the law, then Christ is dead in vain. Galatians 2:21
frustrate = nullify, pollute, annul, neutralise
And this f r u s t r a t i o n undoubtedly causes many mental and emotional effects as people try to please God by keeping the Law instead of having Jesus alone as our righteousness and freely serving Him in simple faith.
It is finished were Jesus last words John 19:30 The whole Law and its commandments, statutes, ordinances, judgements, precepts, including circumcision and Sabbath keeping … F I N I S H E D ... done away with …. the Old Testament … fulfilled and gone. (and after all - it was for the Jews - not us the Gentiles)
My comment here is that Jesus was born under the Law period, lived under the Law period, and died under the Law period - when the Law period was completed / fulfilled and the dispensation of GRACE commenced, the veil of the temples was rent from TOP to Bottom, earthquake, darkness, resurrection of dead saints etc etc becoming ... the pivotal moment in all of history.
Actually, in my view, the 4 Gospels should have been included in the Old Testament, not the New … except for the last few chapters of each Gospel, which would have helped many to understand this division of where the 2 Testaments stop and start much better and clearer.
Tell me, you that desire to be under the law, do ye not hear the law? For it is written, that Abraham had two sons, the one by a bondmaid, the other by a freewoman. But he who was of the bondwoman was born after the flesh; but he of the freewoman was by promise. Which things are an allegory: for these are the two covenants; the one from the mount Sinai, which genders to bondage, which is Agar. For this Agar is mount Sinai in Arabia, and answers to Jerusalem which now is, and is in bondage with her children. But Jerusalem which is above is free, which is the mother of us all. For it is written, Rejoice, you barren that bears not; break forth and cry, you that travails not: for the desolate has many more children than she which has an husband. Now we, brethren, as Isaac was, are the children of promise. But as then he that was born after the flesh persecuted him that was born after the Spirit, even so it is now. Nevertheless what says the scripture? Cast out the bondwoman and her son: for the son of the bondwoman shall not be heir with the son of the free-woman. So then, brethren, we are not children of the bondwoman, but of the free. Galatians 4: 21-31
Martin Luther saw it, and it changed him, and then he changed the world around him
Wherefore then serves the law? It was added because of transgressions, till the seed (Jesus) should come to whom the promise was made; and it was ordained by angels in the hand of a mediator. Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith. But after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster. For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus. Galatians 3: 19, 24-26
I well remember many decades ago now, when considering spiritual things and creation and the purpose of life, I somehow found the 10 Commandments in Exodus 20, went through them and assessed that I had broken all except one (and that 1 only by a hair-breath) .. so I had broken 9.9 out of 10 … and where did that leave me ? And so soon afterwards I received Jesus as Saviour and Lord. And that is the whole purpose of the Law and the 10 Commandments - as a mirror to show us our condition in Gods sight, and our need of a saviour, that we are “dirty” and that we needs “go wash“
Who also has made us able ministers of the new testament; not of the letter, but of the spirit: for the letter (of the Law) kills, but the spirit gives life. But if the ministration of death, written and engraved in stones, was glorious, so that the children of Israel could not steadfastly behold the face of Moses for the glory of his countenance; which glory was to be done away: For if that which is done away was glorious, much more that which remains is glorious. Seeing then that we have such hope, we use great plainness of speech: And not as Moses, which put a veil over his face, that the children of Israel could not steadfastly look to the end of that which is abolished: But their minds were blinded: for until this day remains the same veil untaken away in the reading of the old testament; which veil is done away in Christ. But even unto this day, when Moses is read, the veil is upon their heart. Nevertheless when it shall turn to the Lord, the veil shall be taken away. Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord. 2 Corinthians 3: 6-18
Note : 4 times Paul states that the old ministry of death is done away
Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new. 2 Corinthians 5:17
Oh, that all could see the dangers of adulterating Grace with any measure of Law, and that this religious veil could be lifted.
But to keep the the PRS (the Present Religious System) in existence, and the people returning to the pews week by week - trying to please God by their earnest efforts to keep the Commandments etc ... and the collection bags full ... this “another Gospel” continues generally unabated throughout Christendom and the western TV channels in this day and age.
So, nothing much has changed since St Pauls era, and the time of his writings .... agree ? |
