We'd love to receive your on this article!
Now, I'm not a theological student who has studied Hebrew and Greek etc
To each their own … so I leave translation to others with more time and abilities. (But I did enjoy a theological course studying GOD so much that I repeated itthe next year for a while)
However the subject of the Trinity gets raised every so often, and I'm well aware that it has been the subject of much debate and division down through the Centuries, into which I have no desire to get drawn !
And yet …. sound doctrine is important ... as Paul states to Timothy 11 times to my count in 1 &2 Timothy.
Recently, someone I know well has written a book, of over 200 pages, and of some 14 years endeavour he tells me, to “investigate the validity of Trinitarian theology in Christian teaching” but which is at odds with much of Foundations of Christian Doctrine by Kevin J Conner which I have read over the decades and respect.
I also respect the references andnotes of Rev C I Scofield first published in 1909, which I have read and pondered for well over 50 years now.
Recently, I have read his notes yet again : Page 983 ...
God is revealed in the Old Testament through His names as follows :
PRIMARY
God El, Elah, orElohim
LORD Jehovah
Lord Adon orAdonai
COMPOUND with El = God
Almighty God ElShaddai
Most high or most high God El Elyon
everlasting God ElOlam
COMPOUND with Jehovah = LORD
LORD God Jehovah Elohim
Lord GOD Adonai Jehovah
LORD of hosts Jehovah Sabaoth
The Trinity is suggested by the 3 times repeated groups of threes
This is not an arbitrary arrangement but adheres in the Old Testament itself
This revelation of God by His names is invariably made in connection with some particular need of His people, and there can be no need of man to which these names do not answer as showing that man's true resource is in God. Even human failure and sin but evoke new and fuller revelations oft he divine fullness.
To me this is a wondrous statement and an exhilarating study ! What a God we serve !
He continues … The Old Testament Scripture reveal the existence of a Supreme being, the Creator of the universe and of man, the Source of all life and of all intelligence, who is to be worshipped and served by men and angels. This Supreme Being is One, but in some sense not fully revealed in the Old Testament is a unity in plurality. This is shown by the plural name Elohim, by the use of the plural pronoun in the interrelation of Deity as evidenced in Genesis 1;26, 3;22
Psalm 110:1 Isaiah 6:8 That this plurality is really a Trinity is intimated in the three primary names of Deity, and in the three fold ascription of the Seraphim in Isaiah 6:3 That the interrelation of deity is that of the Father and Son is directly asserted in Psalm 2:7(& Hebrews 1:5) and the Spirit is distinctly recognised in Hispersonality, and to Him are ascribed all the divine attributes.
Then there's another passage andanother strong indication ...
And Jesus came and spoke unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo,I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen. Matthew 28:18 - 20
Schofield again notes here …
The word is in the singular - the “NAME” not names. The Father, Son, and the Holy Ghost is the final name of the one true God. It affirms:
1 that God is one
-
That He subsists in a personality which is threefold, indicated by relationship as Father and Son; by a mode of being as Spirit; and by the different parts taken by the Godhead in manifestation and in the work of redemption. In Matthew 3:16, 17, Mark 1:10, 11, Luke 3:21, 22 the three persons are in manifestation together.
-
the conjunction in one name of the three persons affirms equality and oneness of substance
I also personally wonder at the Seraphim's words ... HOLY, HOLY, HOLY is the LORD of hosts: the whole earth is full of his glory in Isaiah 6:3 as indicating His Triune being ! For the Seraphim to repeat HOLY x 3 times to me is most significant. They would know exactly who they worship, and what they were saying !
My glimpse of the wonder of theTrinity rests easily with me !
For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known. 1 Corinthians 13:12
