2 HIGH PRIESTS meet
It was probably the most significant meeting that ever took place !
A meeting that changed history.
The meeting between Jesus and Caiaphas, that took place in the palace of the High Priest, recorded in Matthew 26 : 63 > (Amp)
The High Priest asked Jesus the most direct and crucial question of all time …
I call upon you to swear by the living God, and tell us whether you are the Christ, the Son of God. Jesus said to him, You have stated [the fact]. More than that, I tell you: You will in the future see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of the Almighty and coming on the clouds of the sky. Then the High Priest tore his clothes and exclaimed, He has uttered blasphemy! What need have we of further evidence? You have now heard His blasphemy. What do you think now? They answered, He deserves to be put to death.
They said ... You Christ the Messiah They all knew the full meaning and impact of what Jesus had just said , that he claimed to be the very Christ, the promised and long awaited Messiah.
1523 years previously, Moses had told Aaron the very first High Priest, in Leviticus 10:6 Uncover not your heads, nor rend your clothes, lest you die, and lest wrath comes upon the people
When Caiaphas as the current High Priest, tore his clothes, his priestly robes, which High Priests had been expressly told not to do, he effectively abdicated his High Priestly role.
What he didn't realise, was that he was transferring his role over to the man standing before him.
The significance of this meeting and what had just happened was probably of the greatest and deepest significance ever to occur on this planet.
The dispensation of LAW brought by Moses that had lasted 1523 years was about to end.
The dispensation of GRACE being brought by Jesus was about to formally commence.
A new HIGH PRIEST after the order of Melchisidec Hebrew 5:1-10 was introduced.
A new Covenant was being written, and now transferred ... begun.
Hebrews 6, 7 & 8 expands on this new High Priest's role, effect and mission.
God / Jesus … the giver / writer of the 10 commandments on stone and the old Law Covenant had just ushered in a New Covenant written on men's hearts
But this transfer of Law to Grace was to be difficult with much conflict and bloodshed, persecution and trouble.
For Law does not go meekly nor quietly.
John the Baptist as forerunner to Christ the Messiah, had already been executed
Jesus was soon to be crucified ... but to rise again
Stephen was the first Christian martyr, consented to and witnessed by a Pharisee called Saul who made havock of the church believers Acts 8:1-3
Each of the apostles died one by one as martyrs in various ways, times and places.
And then on the road to Damascus, Saul was to personally meet the risen Jesus Acts 9:1-16 and was transformed from a persecutor to a preacher Galatians 1:12-16
But the conflict continued as Ishmael's seed wrestled with Issac's seed, to this very day and age.
Law does not pass easily, nor yield to mercy and GRACE readily !
Everywhere that Paul went he was in conflict with the legalists, the Pharisees, the Law continuers.
And so to this day … proponents of the Law still resist GRACE.
Works still oppose FAITH in Jesus sacrifice.
GRACE is still intermingled with LAW, and is polluted by it.
But on a mountain one year earlier Matthew 17:1-5 the passing of the Old Covenant to the New Covenant had been clearly portrayed
And six days after this, Jesus took with Him Peter and James and John his brother, and led them up on a high mountain by themselves. And His appearance underwent a change in their presence; and His face shone a clear and bright like the sun, and His clothing became as white as light. And behold, there appeared to them Moses and Elijah, who kept talking with Him. Then Peter began to speak and said to Jesus, Lord, it is good and delightful that we are here; if You approve, I will put up three booths here — one for You and one for Moses and one for Elijah. While he was still speaking, behold, a shining cloud (composed of light) overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said, This is My Son, My Beloved, with Whom I am and have always been delighted. Listen to Him! … HEAR YE HIM
Moses represented the LAW Elijah represented the PROPHETS
Peter, dear Peter, was just like many modern day religious clergy, and wanted to construct 3 religious buildings - he wanted to continue to mix LAW, and the PROPHETS, with GRACE … all in together – a mixture - a religious 'stew'
But GOD Himself intervened, overshadowed the event, and set the priorities straight...
THIS IS MY BELOVED SON, HEAR YE HIM … Jesus alone, supreme, exalted.
Mixing Law with GRACE only serves to pollute GRACE, and render it ineffective.
and most ordinary people can pick it a mile off.
and God is watching !
